Proposal Type One: Corpus-Based

The following is a list of items typically included in a Type One research proposal for MA in translation studies. The order of items within chapters may vary somehow, depending on each specific study.

Chapter One: The Problem 1.Introduction 2.Background of the problem: 2.Background of the problem: translational trends related to the problem, unresolved issues, … 3.Statement of the problem: 3.Statement of the problem: Basic difficulty, area of concern, felt need 4.Significance of the study 5.Purpose of the study: 5.Purpose of the study: goal, practical outcomes or products 6.Research Question(s) 7.Research Hypotheses 8.Theoretical framework 9.Definition of key terms 9.Definition of key terms (conceptual terms are defined here; operational definitions may be given in Methodology Chapter) 10.Scope and delimitations of the study 10.Scope and delimitations of the study (Limitations of the study)

Chapter Two: Review of the Related Literature 1.Organization of the Chapter: 1.Organization of the Chapter: Overview 2.Historical Background This chapter is meant to give information on existing studies related to your own research, such as what has been found, who has done work, when and where latest similar or related research studies were completed, what approaches were followed and what conclusions were derived. The chapter normally includes several subtitles, covering other related topics. What is very important in this chapter is how to quote and cite. Remember that the more references you give, the more valid your own research becomes. So give full information on your references, such as name of author, researcher, year and page number of the work you are quoting from (e.g. Venuti 2000: 235) and be very careful not to mix your own ideas with those of the people you are quoting from or citing. Use either the style sheet given in Map, or MLA, or APA. Just make sure that you use only one method of referencing all through your work.. Summary of the Review of Literature 3. Summary of the Review of Literature

Chapter Three: Methodology 1.Overview 2.Research Questions 2.Research Questions (Optional) 3.Description of type of research 3.Description of type of research (e.g. descriptive, correlational, causal-comparative, experimental, ex-post facto, etc. ) 4.Research design 4.Research design (description of independent and dependent variables) 5.Corpus: 5.Corpus: ( A corpus is normally a running text, which means that you need to have all your written material typed in Word Format and saved on CD). under this title you need to specify the elements of the corpus, type of the corpus (parallel/ comparable) texts, text type, size, and how it was established. The size of the corpus is at least 100,000 words for written texts and 10 films for Audiovisual texts. 5. 1. corpus design 5. 2. Rationale

Instruments: 6. Instruments: Concordancing software (if appropriate), or model for manual work with the corpus Procedures: 7. Procedures: how is the corpus segmented and studied, what is the unit of analysis in your study (e.g. is a word marked by “a space” in the Word software, or by its form); if it is a sentence, you have to say what you mean by “ sentence” (e.g. is a sentence marked by “a verb”, or “ a proposition”, or what). Data collection and recording: 8. Data collection and recording: what information are you going to extract from your corpus, how is the data collected/ extracted, recorded and classified. 9.Data classification, processing and analysis: 9.Data classification, processing and analysis: how is the data analyzed

Chapter Four: Findings (Analysis and Evaluation) 1.Findings are presented in Tables or Charts (where appropriate) 2.Each table is followed by a discussion of the results 3.A separate section, often entitled “discussion” or “Interpretation” ties together findings in relation to theory or review of literature( e.g. The findings are in line with …)Point: Results آمار و ارقام دارد Findings يافته هاي غير آماري

Chapter Five: Summary, Conclusions, Pedagogical Implications, suggestions for Further Research 1.Brief summary of everything 1.Brief summary of everything (research question(s), hypothesis, methodology, results and findings) covered in the first three chapters ad in the “Findings” of Chapter Four 2.Conclusion based on the findings 2.Conclusion based on the findings (no quotations) 3.Suggestions: 3.Suggestions: practical suggestions for other/additional research

List of References non-internet About 15-20 non-internet references
