21. Non-Traditional Careers STEM
A nontraditional career is ANY occupations in which women or men comprise 25% or less of its total employment.
Look at the handout – put an M or F on the line next to each profession – look at your choices then compare/contrast with you partner

22. Why is this important?
Nontraditional careers for one of the genders – such as information technology, nursing, criminal justice, early education and engineering often experience a labor shortage, so there is high demand for skilled employees in those occupations
Typically people who choose nontraditional occupations enjoy a greater job satisfaction because they are working in fields they have a genuine interest in.
Research on work environments find that a diverse workforce can be “more innovative, productive, and creative than a non-diverse workforce”
Trailblazing women who work in nontraditional fields can expect lifetime earnings of 150 percent more than comparable women in the traditional female occupation.
