5 My 1 st Year of School Kindergarten is a year of growing! You will see your child grow and develop socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. As a parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. There are many things that you, as parents, can do to help your child adjust easily and eagerly to their first school experience in Kindergarten.

6 Kindergarten Readiness Children will adjust quickly and get the maximum benefit from Kindergarten by being able to do the following skills independently.

7 Essential Skills Tie shoes Recite full name, address, and phone number Put on and take off your coat all by yourself, fasten your coat, zip and unzip, hang up your coat neatly Use tissue properly Use the toilet properly and fasten your clothes

8 Use Your Manners Say “yes” and “no”, “please” and “thank you”, at the proper times. Be quiet when someone else is talking. Wait your turn Share and play nicely with others Respect the care of toys and materials. Put them away when you are done using them. Listen to stories being read Show respect for authority

9 What to Work on With Your Child – Through Conversation Talk to your child about things around you, what you are doing or where you are going. What do they notice? Ask your child to point to pictures as you identify them. What do they see or observe? Allow your child to see you reading and writing. Talk about it together. Talk about your day together – What did you do today at work, home, or out & about? Listen to your child and model good listening

18 Life at Seven Hills 1—be on time, drop of by 8:30 a.m. 2—be prepared—evening routine 3—be rested—set a bed time 4—contact teacher with questions about class life 5—contact main office with general questions 6—work with school nurse—allergies, medications—WE ARE A NUT FREE CAMPUS

19 Life at Seven Hills 7—volunteer—get involved in their school life; Parent Connection 8—grow with your child through interdependence 9—read emails/newsletters regularly (The Chronicles and Parent Handbook online) 10—follow protocols and procedures
