The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint (GAELP): Voluntary collaborative initiative; Focus & catalyze the efforts of a diverse range of stakeholders; Achieve international goals: prevent children's exposure to lead from paint & minimize occupational exposures to lead paint. Background of the GAELP ICCM2 (2009): 1 st opportunity SAICM partners to introduce new & emerging issues Lead in paint: One of the emerging issues ICCM2 Resolution II/4 B endorsed establishment global partnership to promote the phase-out of the use of lead in paint now called GAELP. Contribution to the implementation of para. 57 of the PI WSSD and SAICM Broad objective: phase out the manufacture and sale of paints containing lead and eventually to eliminate the risks from such paint.

4. GLOBAL ALLIANCE TO ELIMINATE LEAD PAINT ICCM2 Resolution II/4 B also: Invites interested stakeholders to became members (financial or in-kind contributions Develop a business plan with clear milestones and targets Invited UNEP and WHO to serve as the secretariat of the global partnership

5. The work of the Global Alliance is organized in five focal areas:  Environmental aspects,  Health aspects,  Worker's health,  Legislation and regulation, and  Outreach to industry.

6. GLOBAL ALLIANCE TO ELIMINATE LEAD PAINT The term “paint” includes: varnishes, lacquers, stains, enamels, glazes, primers or coatings used for any purposes. Paint is typically a mixture of resins, pigments, fillers, solvents, and other additives. “Lead paint” is paint to which one or more lead compounds have been added. Lead compounds that are typically added to paint are numerous. Lead compounds may also be present in paint as a contaminant from other paint ingredients. Current data from a number of countries suggests that lead levels in many decorative paints are less than 90 ppm and often below 45 ppm. Efforts should be made to keep the total lead content in paints as low as possible.

Current activities and progress (Cont.): First organizational meeting (Geneva, 26-28 May 2010): developed the overall goals and objectives for the initiative and formulated priority focal areas and workplans. Establishment of a Interim Advisory Group to discuss cross-cutting issues, promote actions consistent with the overall goals and objectives and monitor progress;
