Chlamydia Pathogen: Bacteria- Chlamydia trachomatis Slang: Clam Transmission: during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Male symptoms: discharge from the penis Female Symptoms: abnormal vaginal discharge or burning sensation while urinating.

HPV Pathogen: Virus- Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) Slang: Warts Transmission: infects the skin and mucous membranes. –There are more than 40 HPV Male symptoms: genital warts Female symptoms: genital warts

HPV Long term effects: certain strains of HPV can cause cervical cancer in women. –Cervical cancer does not have symptoms- must be screened for this. –6.2 million people are infected with HPV every year. Treatment: None (warts can be removed)

Genital Herpes Pathogen: Virus-herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Transmission: intercourse or anal sex. Occurs mainly when a person does not have sores but still carries the virus and passes it to sexual partner. Male symptoms: Blisters on or around genitals or rectum. Female symptoms: Blisters

Genital Herpes Long term effects: 4 to 5 outbreaks a year. Painful sores. –one out of five adolescents and adults, have had genital HSV infection Treatment: no cure, but can treat symptoms

Gonorrhea Pathogen: Neisseria gonorrhoeae Slang: the gash/the clap Transmission: intercourse, anal or oral sex Male symptoms: burning while urinating, yellow or green discharge from penis, swollen testes. Female symptoms: Burning while urinating, vaginal discharge, abnormal bleeding

Gonorrhea Long-term effects- –can be spread from mother to baby during delivery. –Causes PID. –Causes infertility. –Can spread to blood and joints (fatal) Treatment: Antibiotics (bacteria are becoming resistant)

Syphilis Pathogen: Bacteria-Treponema pallidum. It has often been called “the great imitator” Transmission: passed from person to person through direct contact with a syphilis sore. Male symptoms: Sores on penis or anus, skin rash Female symptoms: Sores on vagina or anus

Syphilis Long-term effects: –Easier to transmit HIV. –Damages internal organs. – Death. Treatment: Antibiotics Syphilis chancre of the mouth

To Sum Up STD’s are painful and hard to cure. They have long term effects that can affect you the rest of your life. THEY ARE GROSS They can be prevented through abstinence and safe-sex practices.
