Sustainability and London’s 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Learning Objectives: 1.I am aiming to develop my knowledge of the 2012 London Olympic Games. 2.To find out key points about the games and familiarise myself with the DME Booklet.

My ‘Green’ Olympic Games If you were planning the 2012 Olympic Games how would you make them green, sustainable and environmentally friendly. Come up with your top TEN ideas. Think about people and communities too!

Planning a sustainable Games from the outset Sustainability was embedded in the bid for the 2012 Games. We committed to: use venues already existing in the UK where possible; only make permanent structures that will have a long- term use after the Games; build temporary structures for everything else. “We want to use the Games as a catalyst for change, for the regeneration of and improvement of quality of life in East London and encourage more sustainable living across the whole of the UK”.

The Sustainability Plan focuses on five key themes: 1. Climate change: minimising greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring legacy facilities are able to cope with the impacts of climate change. 2. Waste: minimising waste at every stage of the project, ensuring no waste is sent to landfill during Games-time, and encouraging the development of new waste processing infrastructure in East London. 3. Biodiversity: minimising the impact of the Games on wildlife and their habitats in and around Games venues, leaving a legacy of enhanced habitats where we can, eg the Olympic Park. 4. Inclusion: Promoting access for all and celebrating the diversity of London and the UK, creating new employment, training and business opportunities. 5. Healthy living: Inspiring people across the country to take up sport and develop active, healthy and sustainable lifestyles.

Guess the numbers 1.How much will it cost? 2.How much is that per UK household? 3.Where does the money come from? How many……….. Athletes Events Organisers spectators Sponsors Journalists Staff (volunteers) Paralympics Competitors Officials?

This in opportunity for collaboration! 1. Read the Economic choices. Start with Option 1 – Develop a ‘Green Park ’ for sustainable employment and research. Create a ‘for and against’ list about the good and bad points of the proposal. These are your opinions and ideas, they will form the backbone of a good, well supported answer. Do any of the facts, opinions, figures and details in the booklet support your ideas. 2. SHARE your ideas and compare with a friend. Then get together with another pair and compare all ideas. Are any ideas better than others? Are some not relevant or too poor to be taken seriously (hopefully not). 3. Draw your lists together and write up on huge paper which will be displayed around the room. Put the best or strongest ideas at the top and the weakest at the bottom. (someone should type out the definitive list for you to keep a copy of). Repeat this for the remaining two economic options. Which economic option do YOU think is best. Do all of your group agree. Which is worse and why? 4.Repeat this process for the social options.
