Christianity Islam Judaism Hinduism Buddhism These are determined by the number of followers

4 History Three of the five religions can be traced to the descendents of one man Abraham is considered to be the father of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam

5 Abraham Hagar Sarah Descendents eventually went on to found Judaism - then Christianity Descendants eventually went on to found Islam

Oldest to Youngest Judaism --> Christianity --> Islam All are monotheistic This means they believe in one god

Each of the three: Have places of worship Jewish - Synagogue Christianity - Church - Cathedral Islam - Mosque

Each of the three: Have religious holidays Jewish - Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah Christianity - Christmas and Easter Islam - Ramadan

Developed the eight-fold path Buddha is not seen as a god, but as a teacher or prophet Found mostly in southeast Asia and other parts of Asia

17 Hinduism The only Polytheistic religion of the five main religions
This means they has more than one god Hindus believe in reincarnation The idea that people return to live again after dying Hindus believe in Karma What you do in this life carries over to the next

18 Hinduism Hindus (although technically illegal) follow a caste system
Levels in society ranging from powerful, wealthy people to slave-type people Those with bad karma (people who have done bad things) will be reincarnated into a lower caste Those with good karma (people who have done good things) will be reincarnated into a higher caste

19 Hinduism Hindu goal is not a better caste - release from this world
Hindus believe in family spirits as well as their main gods The Hindu Trinity: Brahman the Creator Vishnu the Protector Shiva the Destroyer Each very complex and can take many forms
