3. I. The World of Knights A. Knights: Lower nobles who served as mounted warriors for lords during the Middle Ages. B. At age 7, a boy slated to become a knight was sent to the castle of his father’s lord. There he learned how to ride, fight, hunt and keep weapons in good condition.

4. I. The World of Knights C. With his training finished at the age of 21, the youth became a knight. He would kneel before an older knight and receive a dubbing. “In the name of God, Saint Michael and Saint George, I dub thee knight. Be valiant.”

5. I. The World of Knights D. Feudal warfare occupied most of the time of knights. As these wars started to decrease by the 1100s, tournaments, or mock battles came into fashion.

8. Discussion Question Based on the clip, do you think that American troops in Afghanistan showed the values of chivalry? Why or why not?

9. I. The World of Knights F. Values of chivalry are adopted by Troubadours, wandering poets who praise the perfection, beauty and wit of women. Example: Poetry of Guillaume de Machaut, French troubadour of the 1300s: For I love you so much, truly, that one could sooner dry up the deep sea and hold back its waves than I could constrain myself from loving you.
