1. List the 5 different kinds of maps that we have studied (tickets if I see you using your notes!). 2. Write down one important thing that you remember about each of these maps. 3. Jot down everything you remember about our Big Goal (clues allllll around the room!) Essential Question: How does my absolute location determine the climate that I experience?

With your group, read the article and highlight everything in it that you think has to do with LOCATION

Google Earth Google Maps Outskirts Exact Address Latitude Longitude Pakistan

Earth is so BIG. How do we know how to find where things are? Why do we have different types of weather? Words we will know and work with by end of today: Latitude Longitude Prime Meridian Hemisphere Equator Absolute Location, Relative Location

To understand the Earth, we have divided it into FOUR hemispheres The line that cuts across the middle is called the equator The line that cuts it up and down is called the prime meridian

Latitude measures distance North and South of equator in degrees Latitude lines are parallel. They never meet.

Longitude measures East and West of the Prime Meridian in Degrees Lines of longitude all meet at North and South Poles

Latitude and longitude work together to form a grid on the earth’s surface

Absolute Location: The exact location and coordinates of a place Relative Location: The location of a place described by landmarks Think- Pair- Share: What are some examples that you can think of Relative Location?

Arctic Circle: Cold year round Tropic of Cancer: Seasonal Equator: Hot and Humid year round Tropic of Capricorn: Seasonal Antarctic Circle: Cold year round

Let’s look at some examples of dividing up our Earth!

Fill in the continent, special line of latitude in the boxes provided according to the latitude and longitude given. Draw a picture of the climate you would experience if you lived there.

How does where you live in the world affect the climate you would experience? Your answer should include: latitude, longitude and hemispheres.
