13 How do you Build Cohesion? Make the group as small as possible Be on the Same Page With Team Goals Increase the time members spend together Increase the team’s status and the perceived difficulty of attaining membership Stimulate Competition With Other Teams Give Rewards to the Team and not Just Individuals Physically Isolate the Group

14 How do you Create “Team Players?” Hiring Team Players Training Team Players Rewarding Team Players

15 When teams aren’t the answer Can the work be done better by one person? Simple tasks are better left to individuals Does the work create a common purpose or set of “team goals” as opposed to an aggregate of “individual goals.” What is the level of interdependence?

16 The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team Identify and discuss individual strengths and weaknesses Spend considerable time in face-to-face meetings and working sessions Acknowledge that conflict is required for productive meetings Understand individual team member’s natural conflict styles, and establish common ground rules for engaging in conflict Review commitments at the end of each meeting to ensure all team members are aligned Adopt a “disagree and commit” mentality—make sure all team members are committed regardless of initial disagreements Explicitly communicate goals and standards of behavior Regularly discuss performance versus goals and standards Keep the team focused on tangible group goals Reward individuals based on team goals and collective success
