BIOMASS ENERGY Matthew Burns and Reid Slingerland

What is Biomass Energy  Biomass is the use of organic material from either plants or animals, excluding food products  Biomass is one of many alternative sources of producing electricity

New York State Investment in Biomass Energy  New York State is currently investing $57 million into biomass energy  This money will be used to support anaerobic digester technology

United States Investment in Biomass Energy  Total expenditures for biomass energy equaled $50.9 billion  Some of this money was used to construct new plant structures and buy or make new equipment for the plants

Latest Scientific Advances in Biomass Energy  Some of the latest advances in biomass energy include the increase in the amount of electricity they are able to put out (from 100 kilowatts to possible over 2 megawatts)

Biomass Power Plants in New York State  There are currently 12 operational biomass power plants in New York State

Biomass Power Plants in the United States  There are currently 214 operational biomass energy plants in the United States

How much Biomass Energy is used  Currently biomass energy makes up around 8.5% of all of the electricity used in the United States

Advantages of Biomass Energy  Biomass energy lowers dependence on fossil fuels  Is an easily available source of power  Assists solid waste management  Can be easily stored for future energy  Virtually inexhaustible

Disadvantages of Biomass Energy  Some carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are still released into the air  The cost of the extraction of biomass is more expensive than that of fossil fuels  Setting up a biomass plant requires large areas
