2. Upon arrival to OGECS, students sit in the hallway reading an AR book or may enter the classroom to take an AR test until the bell rings at 7:35. At that time, students enter the classroom to unpack their book bags and begin working on the assigned am work. The WTMN show comes on after the tardy bell at 7:40.

Soccer Club - Señor Ed Carson for boys & girls combined Basketball Teams – boys & girls Try-outs are usually in October Chorus – 3 rd -5 th grades Try-outs will be held again in the Spring Enrichment Classes – Extended Day program Karate, Hip Hop Dance, Brick-by-Brick, Creative Arts are currently beginning *Your child does NOT have to be enrolled in the extended day program to participate in these activities

6. Students are divided between Mrs. Henninger and myself based on Spring 2014 MAP scores. Each week the students are given a spelling list incorporating various spelling rules. The students are using the Journeys Reading basal reader and book sets. Students are taught a reading skill each week to improve comprehension.

7. Students are expected to read books within their level range (one color above or below). OG’s comprehension goal is 85% or better. The 3 rd grade point goal is 40 points. This means your child should earn at least 10 new points each nine weeks. AR rewards are given at the end of the year with a special field trip for students earning 100 or more points.

8. All students go to Mrs. Henninger’s classroom for Science instruction. This year they will study units on Life Science (plants/animals), Earth Science (Rocks/Minerals), Physical Science (electricity/magnetism), and

9. The students will expand on their knowledge of the English language in spoken and written forms.

11. The students will expand on the concepts of addition/subtraction, time/money, data analysis, geometry, and measurement. The students will learn the multiplication facts through 12 and the relationship between multiplication and division.

12. The students will learn about the history of South Carolina. We will learn about its land and people through the use of maps, projects, stories, and primary documents.

13. The students are divided up among the 2 nd & 3 rd grade teachers based on Spring 2014 MAP scores for additional Math instruction.

14. Homework is assigned each night Monday-Thursday for additional practice on the day’s lessons. Homework is written daily in the student’s planner located in the WEST binder and should take between 30-45 minutes to complete.

15. Each student is expected to follow all classroom and school rules. Classroom rules were established on the first day of school with the students. A level system is implemented in 3E with Level 3 being the “place to be” rewarding students with the most privileges.

17. Email is the quickest and easiest form of communication. I can usually respond to an email promptly. I am available for conferences after school hours until 4:00pm. A weekly email will be sent on Monday afternoons to apprise you of important information. A weekly newsletter is posted to my webpage as well. Graded papers will be sent home every other Monday along with a behavior report.

18. Volunteer in our Classroom! I LOVE to have parents come in to help in the classroom. I ALWAYS have things that need to be done (copies, laminating, sorting). I also appreciate parents who like to do things at home (cut, pull-apart, separate). The children really love when you come in to their room as well! We love for you to eat lunch or go on field trips with us as well!

19. 3 rd grade has several field trips throughout the year. Prices are usually $5-15 based on the trip. 20. Report cards will be issued on: 1 st Nine Weeks – October 29 (Awards Ceremony – Oct. 30 ) 2 nd Nine Weeks – January 21 3 rd Nine Weeks – April 8 4 th Nine Weeks – June 4 The following awards will be given at the Awards Ceremony at the end of each nine weeks: Principal’s List = ALL A’s Honor Roll = A Average (mostly A’s but a few B’s) Merit Award = A’s & B’s Outstanding Effort = student(s) showing great improvement Good Citizens = student(s) exhibiting leadership in the classroom

21. BIRTHDAY BOOKS Surprise your child AND support the OGECS Media Center. Visit the media center and purchase a book your child will enjoy. Complete the information sheet and sign the birthday card. Your child will be the first person to check out the book. The child’s birthday and birthday book will be announced on the WTMN show. A bookplate documenting your child’s birthday will be placed on the inside front cover of the book. Weekend birthdays will be announced on Fridays. Students with summer birthdays will be honored on their “half” birthday. June birthdays in December. July birthdays in January. August birthdays in February. Check the media center teacher page to see a partial list of birthday books. This page will be updated as more books arrive.
