Physical Development What does the newborn look like? Characteristics such as size, body proportion, skin color, and facial features are all part of a newborns physical characteristics.

Height and Weight Newborns usually weigh somewhere around 5.5 to 10 pounds In terms of total body length, the average ranges from 14 to 20 inches

Feeding: Nutrients = growth Breast Feeding ◦ Breast milk contains the right proportions of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. ◦ Breast fed babies have low rates of diarrhea, rashes and allergies

Nutrients= Healthy Baby! Bottle/Formula Feeding ◦ Formula feeding is sometimes necessary ◦ Consult a doctor about which formula to use ◦ Two to 2 ½ ounces per pound of body weight in a 24 hour period ◦ Throw away all unfinished formula
