10 Potsdam Conference (July 1945) In Potsdam, Truman and Stalin agreed to recognize each other’s influence over areas where their troops remained Stalin announced that communism and capitalism can’t exist in the same world and that war between the USA and the USSR is certain to happen.

11 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) In 1949, ten Western European nations joined with the US and Canada to form a defensive military alliance. Any country in NATO that was attacked would have the support of all NATO countries. This was the first time the US had joined a military agreement during peacetime.

12 Warsaw Pact Formed by USSR in response to NATO. It included Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania. It was meant to be a defense for the Soviet Union and its satellite countries, as well as contain “Western influence”
