3 PROCESS Get your Registration card from the Counselors now! Choose and circle class selections on your registration card. Take your registration card home and discuss your selections with your parents. Get your PARENT SIGNATURE. Turn your signed registration form into your Social Studies teacher by Monday, February 10 th /Tuesday, February 11 th. You will upload your selections to the parent/student portal of Powerschool during a conference with your counselor.

7 *HONORS VS. NON HONORS CLASSES Honors classes are denoted by an * on your registration sheet You MUST take 5 honors classes per semester if you are trying to be in the top 10% of your graduating class

8 REQUIRED CORE CLASSES YOU MUST TAKE THESE COURSES YOUR SENIOR YEAR You will choose & circle 1 class in each of the following categories Communication Arts 12 American Government Personal Finance (only if you have not already taken) 6 to 6 ½ credits of the electives of your choice

9 COMMUNICATION ARTS Please circle ONE of the following: Com Arts 12 *AP Com Arts 12 *DC World Lit/English *TAG Lit/Humanities 12

10 SOCIAL STUDIES Please circle ONE of the following: Am Government *Am Government

11 PERSONAL FINANCE Personal Finance (You must take this ½ credit to graduate from SJSD) See bottom of registration card in the left column

12 CHOOSING ELECTIVES Select and circle elective credits to equal 8 total for the year. We encourage you to take CORE electives (Math, Science, Comm. Arts, and Social Studies) It has been shown to increase ACT scores IF you are a HILLYARD TECHNICAL SCHOOL student: Circle your 4 hour program on your registration card

13 ELECTIVES Please circle 6-6.5 credits of the following: (make sure you have circled 8 credits worth of course numbers including Communication Arts & Social Studies & Personal Fianance) Mathematics Science World Language Business Industrial Technology Family & Consumer Science Physical Education JROTC Fine Arts General Electives

14 CHOOSING ELECTIVE “ALTERNATES” ALTERNATE Classes: Write in 2 year long alternates and 4 sem. alternates on your registration sheet. These are classes you agree to take if your other class selections cannot be filled. IMPORTANT!! ONLY CLASSES CIRCLED ON YOUR REGISTRATION SHEET OR WRITTEN IN AS ALTERNATES ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOU TAKE NEXT YEAR.

15 SCHEDULE CHANGES NEXT YEAR You will NOT be allowed to change your schedule into a class not listed on your registration card.

16 ACT Taking a rigorous course load (honors and core) is best for achieving a high ACT score Required for admittance to most colleges and universities Scholarship $ depend on it IF you have NOT already taken ACT; take it NOW!! Next test is April 12 th and the deadline is March 7 th ! 2 Fee waivers for those who qualify for free/reduced lunch

17 WHAT TO DO ABOUT FAILED COURSES Register for regular senior classes as if you have passed every course up to this point. First and foremost: we place you in classes that are required for graduation. We do our best to fill your course requests, but sometimes it is impossible. Counselors will adjust your schedule to make room for you to re- take failures. For example: if you failed a class required for graduation this year, we put that class back into your schedule next year Failed graduation requirements must be re-taken until passed.
