2 Business Letter Format
10 Parts Must be in order You must know what each part does

3 Major Parts of a Letter Letterhead if the letter is from a business.

5 Major Parts of a Letter Return Address-the address of the person writing the letter. * ONLY if there is no letterhead..

6 Major Parts of a Letter Dateline-Complete and current date.
* No space below return address! Weird.

7 Major Parts of a Letter 4. Letter Address/Inside Address-the address of the person receiving the letter.

8 Major Parts of a Letter 5. Salutation-the greeting of the letter. Example: Dear Sir or Madam:

9 Major Parts of a Letter Body-the message of the letter.
Notice, no indent. No tab. That’s for informal letters. 

10 Major Parts of a Letter 7. Complimentary Close-the ending of the letter. Example: Sincerely yours,

11 Major Parts of a Letter 8. Handwritten Signature-the author signs the letter after it has been printed.

12 Major Parts of a Letter 9. Keyed Name-the authors typed name.

13 Major Parts of a Letter 10. Typist Initials-initials of the typist.

Return Address - the address of the person writing the letter. Dateline - Complete and current date. Letter Address/Inside Address - the address of the person getting the letter. Salutation - the greeting of the letter. Example: Dear Sir or Madam: Body - the message of the letter. Complimentary Close - the ending of the letter. Example: Sincerely yours, Keyed Name - the author’s typed name. Handwritten Signature - the author signs the letter after it has been printed. Typist Initials - initials of the typist.

15 Formatting – 1st Page Top Margin – 2”  gives space for letterhead.
Right Margin – 1” Left Margin – 1” Bottom Margin - 1”

17 Notes to Remember! The top margin is 2”, side and bottom margins are 1". Typist initials are the initials of the typist and are used when someone other than the writer prepares the letter. Lowercase letters are used, with no space, and with no punctuation, appearing a double space below the signature. Get spacing correct (4 blank lines at times and 2 blank lines at times)

19 Now your job(s): Go to Weebly and open the BUSINESS LETTERS assignment
Compose one of each type of letter from the assignment. [Do #1, 2, 3, both for #4, and pick only 1 for #5.] Save each letter separately. * Name them: r-Business letter 01 – name r-Busines letter 02 – name r-Busines letter 03 – name, r-Busines letter 04a – name r-Busines letter 04b – name r-Busines letter 05 – name Save letters 1-4a as LOCKED Microsoft Word letters [Click REVIEW and RESTRICT EDITING]. No password please. Then submit to teacher via Save letters 4b & 5 normally the first time … then open again and save as PDF’s then hand in ONLY the PDF’s ---- [Keep original MS Word files … just so you can edit them if needed].

Save each letter separately. * You will be told to name them: s-Business letter 01 – name s-Busines letter 02 – name s-Busines letter 03 – name s-Business letter 04-name s-Business letter 05-name You will save letters 1-3 as LOCKED Microsoft Word documents [I’ll remind you how in the directions] You’ll save letters 4 & 5 as PDF’s and hand them in as PDF’s ---- after you save them, once finished, as regular MS Word documents [just so you can edit them as needed]. [Again, directions will explain]
