Wednesday, September 18th, 2019 Common Core Standards: RL , RL and SL Aim: How can we identify the function of character in “The Story of an Hour” (Chopin)? Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) What is your prior knowledge about life in the 1890’s in America? Consider life for women and minorities, technology, literature, etc. 2.) What can you predict about a main character’s experiences or motives in a short story titled “The Story of an Hour”? Objective: Students will be able to identify and analyze what textual details reveal about a character, that character’s Perspective, and that character’s motives.

Wednesday, September 18th, 2019 Aim: How can we identify the function of character in “The Story of an Hour” (Chopin)? Objective: Students will be able to identify and analyze what textual details reveal about a character, that character’s perspective, and that character’s motives. Agenda A.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Choose a captain to represent the table. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. D.) Independent Reading: Read the short story, “The Story of an Hour” (handout). Answer the following questions: What do you know about heart disease? What can happen to someone when you break bad news to someone with heart trouble? What does the author mean by ”veiled hints that revealed in half concealing” (2nd paragraph)? What are some words/phrases that make this author unique in describing characters? What can you interpret about Mrs. Mallard’s actions in the first four paragraphs? What textual details are revealed about Mrs. Mallard’s character in paragraph #8? In paragraph #10, what questions do you have about Mrs. Mallard’s actions/motives? What do you think “monstrous joy” means in paragraph #12? How do you feel about Mrs. Mallard and her husband at this point? Can you make any personal connections to paragraphs 13-19? What can you infer about Mrs. Mallard emerging as a “goddess of victory” in paragraph #20? What are your impressions about the ending? Did you expect the surprise ending? What is the universal theme in this short story and how does Mrs. Mallard’s character contribute to the author’s message? C.) Q & A/Reflections: What were your impressions about “The Story of an Hour”? What were personal challenges and strengths in analyzing the text?
