1 Lesson Starter What is homeostasis?
Which part of the brain regulates body temperature? What is our body’s response to being too warm? What is our body’s response to being too cold?

2 Maintaining stable body conditions

3 Maintaining Glucose levels
Energy Constant level Too much or too little causes problems

4 Hormones control glucose levels
Levels rise and fall Pancreas Insulin= GLUCOSE  GLYCOGEN Glucagon = GLYCOGEN  GLUCOSE

5

6 Note: to copy Blood glucose levels rise after eating a meal
The pancreas monitors the level of blood glucose. Excess blood glucose causes the pancreas to produce the hormone INSULIN. Insulin converts excess glucose to glycogen which is then stored in the liver. If glucose levels are too low then GLUCAGON is released to convert the glycogen back to glucose.

7 Diabetes Millions affected Can’t control excess glucose Symptoms
No cure Treatment Regular blood glucose checks

8 Type 1 diabetes 10% of cases Juvenile onset Autoimmune disorder
NO insulin produced Insulin injection dependant

9 Type 2 diabetes 90% of cases Usually diagnosed >30 Overweight
Insulin produced Diet and Tablets

10 Note: to copy A person is said to have diabetes when the body can’t control excess glucose with insulin. Blood glucose levels can become dangerously HIGH. In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is unable to make enough insulin. The sufferer relies on insulin injections to maintain glucose levels In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas still makes insulin but the insulin doesn’t work very well. Associated with excess body weight and is controlled by diet and tablets.
