World War I becomes a total war,
and governments take control of
national economies.
In the U.S. and Europe, citizens
undergo rationing of goods.
With millions of men at the front, many women go to work in factories and elsewhere.

7. Women During the War
The propaganda effort sought to glorify women’s part in the war effort. In reality, women’s work was dangerous and low paying, and it did not bring women the respect they deserved. For example, in Britain the conditions in factories were so bad that the membership of women trade unionists increased by 276 percent during the war, and women workers sometimes went on strike during the war itself.

8. The Allies Win the War
With Russia’s withdrawal, Germany achieves victory on the Eastern Front.
Though Germany’s eastern troops head west, fresh American troops give the Allies an edge to win the second Battle of the Marne.
The Kaiser abdicates, and Germany and the Allies sign and armistice, ending the war on November 11.
