1 Guided Reading 25.1 EQ: It controls all actions and reactions of the body. 1. Gathers and interprets info. 2. Responds to info. as needed.

2 Guided Reading 25.1--Continued
1. Central Nervous System (CNS): Made up of your brain and spinal cord, it processes and responds to all messages. 2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Made of all other parts of the Nervous System, it uses nerves to carry info. between your body and your CNS.

3 Guided Reading 25.1--Continued

4 1. Neuron: Nerve cell that is specialized and conduct electrical impulses.
2. Axon: Transmits info from spinal cord to muscle fibers. 3. Dendrite: Short, branched extensions of the cell.

5 Guided Reading 25.1--Continued
1. Somatic Nervous System: (SNS) Considered conscious control, neurons that stimulate skeletal muscles like writing, talking, smiling, or jumping. (Voluntary actions) 2. Autonomic Nervous System: (ANS) Considered automatic control, like digestion, heart rate.(Involuntary actions)

7 Homework 25.1: How the Nervous System Works
Functions are receiving info. about the external environment, responding to info., and maintaining homeostasis. (Ex: smell fresh baked cookies and your body receives info, you respond eating a cookie, you maintain homeostasis by providing your body with nutrients. Sensory Neurons: Pick up info from environment. Interneurons: Carry impulses from one neuron to another neuron. Motor Neurons: Transmit nerve impulses to activate muscles.

8 . 3. Chemicals are released from the axon tip. 4. Axon Tip 5. Synapse
6. Dendrite 7. Axon 8. Response 9. Nerve 10. Nerve Impulses 11. Stimulus 12. Neuron

9 Homework 25.1: Divisions of the Nervous System
Central Nervous System Spinal Cord Somatic Ns Cerebellum Cerebrum

10 7. The PNS is a network of nerves branching out from the CNS
7. The PNS is a network of nerves branching out from the CNS. The PNS connects the CNS to the rest of the body. 8. The SNS carries nerve impulses that control voluntary actions. 9. The ANS carries nerve impulses that control involuntary actions. 10. G F E B 11. D C A

11 Quick write: What are the steps of sending signals to and from your brain when you answer the phone?

12

13 Sensory Neurons: Pick up sound info from the phone and send it to the brain. Interneurons: These neurons make up the brain. They interpret the sound as a ringing phone that needs answering. Motor Neurons: Transmit nerve impulses to activate muscles to pick up the phone.

14 Ticket Out The Door--TOTD
Compare what would happen if our Nervous System shut down to the chaos that occurred on the ship in our Book of the Month, “The Wretched Stone”.
