2 The House of Wisdom A library, school/academy, and translation center.
An Abbasid Caliph – al Ma’mum – sponsored the school and sent word all throughout the Empire and the world for scholars to come and share their knowledge and wisdom at this academy. Texts would be copied and translated into Arabic. WHY IMPORTANT: it helped preserve and advance technology, knowledge, and wisdom of the past.

Since the Islamic faith forbids images of Allah or Muhammad, religious structures and artwork is dominated by geometric patterns and the Arabic script to show devotion.

5 The Thousand and One Nights
A collection of short stories, parables, and legends that excite, entertain, & educate. This is where many stories like Sinbad the Sailor and Disney’s Aladdin get their inspiration.

6 3. What was the role of women in Muslim society?
Equal before Allah BUT not before their husbands. Traditional Muslim communities tend to be very male dominated societies (patriarchal). Shari’a (Muslim Law) gives women some rights to own property, but restricts their overall freedom.

7 4. How did Muslim scholars help preserve the knowledge of the Ancient Greeks and Romans?
Muslims were constantly searching for knowledge about the world around them. Such knowledge like in Astronomy would help them pray toward Mecca or travel on their Hajj. In the 9th century, Muslim rulers sponsored the collection of the known knowledge of the day with the creation of a library and academy at the HOUSE OF WISDOM – where all works, regardless of origin, would be translated into Arabic.

8 5. What were some of the Muslim contributions in Medicine, mathematics, and astronomy?
Medical Advances: al-Razi writes an important medical text (The Comprehensive Book) which summarized and added the known medical knowledge of the day and became the ultimate guide for doctors until the 1500’s. Math and Science: The Muslims relied on scientific observation and experimentation to find out cause and effect relationships, not logical reasoning, tradition and superstition. Discovered al-jabr (algebra) and developed trigonometry. Astronomy: Used the Astrolabe & armillary sphere to measure the angles of the sun and the stars above the horizon. (fulfill 5 Pillars)

9 6. The BIG Five: Abassid achievements in Scholarship and the Arts include: The House of Wisdom – like the WWW of today, a kind of Wikipedia! All the known knowledge of the day in one place! Algebra – Math is the basis for all logical thinking. Medical Advances – Doctor Al-Razi wrote medical encyclopedia used for centuries called the. Comprehensive Book Astronomy – Inventions like the Astrolabe and armillary sphere helped Muslims create accurate measurements of the stars for accurate map making and calendars (to fulfill the 5 pillars). Literature – The Thousand and One Nights.
