2 Muslim Society Wealth flows into the Muslim Empire through trade and conquest and this allows the Caliphs to support and subsidize learning and the Arts This wealth helps create urban centers (cities) and Baghdad’s population reaches 1 million people

3 There were 4 Social Classes in Muslim Society 1.Upper class-These were Muslims by birth 2.Second class-Converts to Islam 3.Third class-These were “peoples of the book” 4.Lowest class-Composed of slaves

4 The Role Women in Muslim Lands Women are equal to men as believers Women had specific legal rights Muslim women had more rights than European women of the same time period

5 Muslim Scholarship Extends Knowledge Science is supported by Muslim rulers for three reasons: 1.Rulers wanted expert doctors to treat illnesses 2.Religious followers needed science to tell them when to pray and which direction to pray to face Mecca 3.Muhammad urged the faithful to acquire knowledge

6 The House of Wisdom To help with the acquisition of knowledge a unique center of learning was set up and it was called the House of Wisdom

7 Arts and Sciences Flourish in the Muslim World Medicine- al-Razi was the greatest physician of the Muslim world

8 Math and Science Muslim scientists solved problems by conducting experiments and observations Al-Khwarizimi was a mathematician who wrote the first book on Algebra Muslim scholars made great advances in astronomy and optics

10 Muslim Literature, Art, and Architecture Muslim literature produced fine poetry and fables. The most famous collection of stories is called, A Thousand and One Arabian Nights Muslim art was limited. It was against Islamic belief to draw pictures of human beings so artist turned to creating calligraphy-The Art of Beautiful Writing The Muslims blended the architecture of many cultures to create their own distinctive style. Arabic arches and minarets are examples of this style
