2nd Grade Ms. Taylor’s Sailors Week of April 16, 2018 A Peek at Our Week WEEKLY HOMEWORK Reading: Main Topic We will learn how to identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text. Writing Choose a writing prompt from the April writing calendar Spend time editing/ revising once you have finished your piece Math: Add and Subtract within 1,000 We will learn how to add and subtract within 1,000 using strategies based on place value. We will also learn how to explain (in a written format) why addition and subtraction strategies work by stating the strategy used, transition words, and vocabulary words (such as regroup, decompose, funny number, add, subtract, etc.). Math IXL Review the Explaining Strategies Study Guides – on the class webpage under links Writing: Informational Writing We will review how to write an informational writing piece by writing our All About 2nd Grade books that will be shared at the end of the year party. These books will include a table of contents, informational pages, all about the author page, and favorite memory page. Spelling Choose an activity from the April Speller’s Choice activity sheet S.O.S. for the weekly words – favorite, great, those Reading Read (nonfiction) aloud for 20 minutes and practice determining the main topic of the book Raz Kids Science: Life Cycles We will determine the sequence of the life cycle of 4 common animals (mammal, bird, amphibian, insect) and model the life cycle of a plant from seed to maturity by recording changes over a period of time. S.S./ Science Write an Informational Writing piece that explains all about the life cycle of a frog Class Blog: Spelling & Word Study Spelling/ Reading Rule Language Skill Mark Your Calendar 2 Syllable Words We will learn how to decode two-syllable words with long vowels. (reptile, paper, monkey, secret, broken, tutu) Past Tense We will learn how to form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs (ex: sat, hid, told) when writing or speaking. April 23 – Adventures in Art April 26 – STEM Day (wear black STEM shirts if you have one) and Art Show at 5:00 PM May 9 – Field Day (wear blue class t-shirts) Weekly Words favorite, great, those
