Positive effects of colonization: less local warfare, increased literacy, industrialization. Negative effects: lost culture, new diseases, famine

A. Algeria: Algerians fought French rule for 50 years 1. French had superior weapons, movement fails B. German East Africa: Germans force planting of cotton instead of food crops 1. Maji Maji believed magic water would stop German bullets, movement fails C. Ethiopia: only successful movement against Italy 1. Menelik II buys weapons from France & Russia 2. Defeats Italians in 1896, keeps his country independent D. Liberia: founded by former African- American slaves, also remains independent (US protection)
