Chapter 11 Section 2

Why do we care? Main Idea: Why it matters now:
Europeans embarked on a new phase of empire-building that affected both Africa and the rest of the world. Why it matters now: Many former colonies have political problems that are the result of colonial rule. What examples do you remember?

Forms of Imperialism Colony: Protectorate:

Forms of Imperialism Sphere of Influence: Economic Imperialism:
Area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges. Management Methods Indirect Control Direct Control Used local gov’t.
Limited self-rule Goal: develop future leaders. Gov’t. based on European styles but may have local rules. Ex: British Nigeria, India, and Burma. U.S. Pacific Islands. Foreign officials brought in to rule No self-rule Goal: assimilation (French colonies became French) Gov’t. based only on European styles. Ex: French Somaliland, Vietnam. German Tanganyika. Portuguese Angola. In which method are the people less empowered to rule themselves?

Failed Resistance: Edward Morel, British journalist in the Congo
Nor is violent physical opposition to abuse and injustice henceforth possible for the African in any part of Africa. His chances of effective resistance have been steadily dwindling with the increasing perfectibility in the killing power of modern armament. Thus the African is really helpless against the material gods of the white man, as embodied in the trinity of imperialism, capitalistic exploitation, and militarism. What does Morel believe is the fate of Africa?

Impact of Colonial Rule
Positives: Reduced local warfare Humanitarian efforts – sanitation, hospitals, schools Economic expansion – African products became valued Negatives: African loss of land and independence Death – new diseases brought by Europeans, resistance fighting, and famines Breakdown of traditional cultures – destabilized societies, caused identity problems Artificial boundaries – combined and divided groups Why might the problems caused by artificial boundaries continue after the Europeans left?
