1 The Postwar World Chapter 25 Part 2

2 The U.N. April 25,1945: 50 countries sent delegates to San Francisco to meet with Truman. Finally, an agreement was reached to create the new United Nations. Opened in 1952.

3 Parts of the U.N. General Assembly—similar to a legislature.
Security Council—enforces U.N. policy with military action. The Secretariat—similar to an executive branch.

4 Postwar Europe Europe shattered.
June 5, 1947: Secretary of State George Marshall proposed a new aid program for Europe. Called his plan the Marshall Plan.

5 The Marshall Plan Offer financial aid to any country ravaged by war.
Soviets rejected the aid; busy establishing communist governments; did not want potential opposition. America a little surprised; Russia had been an ally. Resulting tension between Americans and Soviets = Cold War

6 Postwar Japan Japan in ruins. US did two things
1. Take military control of the government. 2. Took responsibility and helped Japan rebuild. Truman appointed MacArthur to supervise the recovery. Japan received the most aid of any country post WWII. US helped Japan write a new constitution; Japan elected a legislative body and gave rights to its citizens.

8 Spiritual Postwar Japan: Side Note
MacArthur described Japan as follows: “Japan is a spiritual vacuum. If you do not fill it with Christianity, it will be filled with communism.” He then called for 1,000+ missionaries. As a result, more than 2,000 missionaries, teachers, and social workers went to Japan to help in its recovery.
