2 Therapeutic Diet – modifications of normal diet to improve specific health conditions.
Anorexia Bulemia

3 Regular Diet No restrictions
At, times slightly reduced calorie content Desserts, cream sauces, salad dressings, fried foods may be decreased or omitted

4 Liquid Diets – after surgery, patient with acute infections or digestive problems, replace fluids lost by vomiting or diarrhea Clear Liquid – Water, apple or grape juice, fat-free broths, plain gelatin, fruit ice, ginger ale, tea, black coffee with sugar Full Liquid – Strained soups and cereals, fruit and vegetable juices, yogurt, hot cocoa, custard, ice cream, pudding, sherbert, milk

5 Soft Diet – food requires little chewing and easy to digest
Used when patient has difficulty chewing or has dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) May be pureed Avoid tough meat, coarse cereal, spicy foods, rich desserts, fried food, raw fruits and vegetables, and nuts

6 Diabetic Diet Patient typically takes insulin
Carbohydrate controlled diet Avoid – sugar heavy foods like candy, soft drinks, desserts, cookies, syrup, honey, jams, jellies

7 Calorie-Controlled Diets
Low and high calorie diets Low calorie – overweight patients, high calorie foods avoided High calorie – underweight patients, anorexia, or hyperthyroidism Extra protein and carbohydrates included

8 Low-Cholesterol Diet Restricts cholesterol and limits fat to less than 50 grams Patients with atherosclerosis and heart disease Avoid foods high in saturated fat

9 Fat-Restricted Diet Less than 50 grams of fat daily
Used for obese patients, patients with gallbladder and liver disease, or atherosclerosis

10 Sodium-Restricted Diets
Low salt or Low sodium Avoid or limit adding salt to food Avoid smoked meats, processed foods, pickles, and some processed cheeses Patients with cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and congestive heart failure), kidney disease and edema (retention of fluids)

11 Protein Diets Low Protein Limit or decrease protein
Patients with kidney or renal diseases and certain allergic conditions High Protein Ordered for children or adolescents where growth delayed, Pregnant or lactating women Before/After surgery Suffering from burns

12 Bland Diet Easily digested foods that do not irritate digestive system
Patients with gastric disorders, colitis, or other diseases of the digestive system

13 Fiber Diets High Fiber – stimulate activity in digestive tract
Low Fiber – patients with digestive and rectal diseases, such as colitis and diarrhea
