1 Welcome Class of 2021

2 Introduction Brent Prasnikar A – Gi Paula Emery Gj – N Lee Brown O – Z
David Salerno Owens Freshman Transition Specialist Almost 95% of our students go to a 2 or 4 year college after high school. Opportunities for all students: Make Lakeridge work for what your student needs to find their own best path.

3 Steps to Success in High School Help them help themselves!

4 On being successful! Support them in being prepared for class
healthy food, plenty of rest, materials Be on time! Encourage them to be focused

5 Organization remind them to…
Bring all materials to class. Write down all assignments and their due dates! Keep good notes. Use colors to improve notes and to emphasize key ideas. Organize your work place at home. Eliminate distractions. Put completed homework where they will know where it is so they can turn it in on time. Use Synergy ParentVue. teachers when necessary.

6 Time Management Start school work the day it’s assigned.
Encourage them to do their best work. It takes time to do work well. Most successful freshmen do 1 – 3 hours of homework each day. Estimate how long each assignment will take. Decide how much effort it needs. Help them prioritize their time. A 5-point assignment should not be given as much time as a 100-point assignment. Learn to use a little bit of time for review. Break down large projects into smaller projects.

7 Thinking/Study/Effort
Preview assignments, handouts, and textbook chapters ahead of time. Do Blue homework on Blue Day. Do White homework on White Day. Spending time reviewing new information daily, makes studying for tests much easier. Support them by knowing who they are: Is it better for them to start the most difficult assignment first or take care of smaller assignments first? Figure out new ways to solve problems.

8 Get help when you need it: Teachers, academic mentors when available, after school tutoring in the library, paid tutors, counselor, Link Crew, Family, peer study groups. List new vocabulary words and definitions. If during your homework you come up with questions or concepts that are unclear, write them down to ask your teacher later. Sometimes before/after school or at TSCT are better times to talk to teachers than during class. Use Study Hall!

9 Teachers Ask questions. Communicate often.
Listen well and follow directions. Participate in class. Figure out the teacher’s style of presenting information. Concentrate on subject matter, not personality. Withhold judgment; get the key ideas. Don’t make assumptions or jump to conclusions. Think critically. Keep an open mind. Remember: Our teachers want your child to succeed!

10 Remember the Foundation for Success
Keep emotions down Stay realistically positive and encouraging Don‘t catastrophize Stay in the present Keep your expectations at an appropriate developmental level for your student Understand where they are at, not where you would prefer them to be Experiment to find what works Use their input and knowledge about themselves Listen to them! Have some fun!

Think about: what kind of college or post high school goals you have and what interests you want to pursue. Are you taking courses that make you a viable candidate for what your goals are.

18 To test or not to test? PSAT is given at Lakeridge to all freshmen, sophomores and juniors each October. ACT or SAT is taken to gain admission to a four year school. We recommend taking either of the above tests during your junior year if in or above advanced algebra.
