Today we will be discussing parenting. Tell me about your family. Who do you live with? Include who is raising you, siblings, other family members, or other people in your home.

2 L.E.Q: How does one define parent, parenting, and parenthood?

3 Parent (defined in two parts)
A person who gives birth to offspring. A person who brings up and cares for a child. 1. Does the term parent include grandparents or other family members who raise a child? Think about the above definitions and explain your answer. 2. What about nannies, child care teachers, school teachers, scout leaders, coaches, and countless other leaders of children’s programs who help care for and raise a child? Explain.

4 Parent applies to the following:
mother and father responsible for their child’s birth. actions of a mother and father in caring for and raising a child. other people who care for a child by serving the role of mother or father. For example, adoptive or foster parents.

5 Parenting Defined as the act or process of raising a child.
Involves 2 things: Meeting the child’s needs to age 18 or sometimes longer. Guiding a child toward the goal of becoming a competent adult. Give examples of needs for children 18 and younger. Give examples of needs for children 18 and older. What do they mean by competent?

6 Conditions on legal rights and responsibilities include:
Parenthood Refers to the role of parenting in society. * Could these roles be affected by the society a parent comes from? Explain. (A role is a set of behaviors related to a certain function you assume in life.) Involves 2 things: Legal Rights Responsibilities Conditions on legal rights and responsibilities include: Gives parents legal rights to make RESPONSIBLE decisions for their child. Decisions must be good for the child by moral and legal standards. Harmful decisions can result in a child being removed from family and legal rights terminated or taken away. Give an example of what this condition means.

7 Reflection: 1. What about people who never have children? Does this mean they will never handle parenting tasks? Explain. 2. Think about how you are being raised and how you have observed how other people around you are being raised. For example, cousins or friends. With these observations what would you consider as an ideal method of parenting? 3. Discuss the challenges of parenting. 4. Discuss the opportunities or advantages of parenting.
