1 Section 1: Scientific Method and Lab Design
Start with jump lab

2 Scientific Method: Procedure used to test an observation
Make an observation Form a hypothesis that can be tested Test the hypothesis using dependent and independent variables. Interpret results to see if it supports the hypothesis. Compare your findings to others to create theories and laws

3

4 Experimental Data: Independent Variable: The part of the experiment that you change or manipulate. Dependent Variable: The part of the experiment that is affected by the change. Label the independent and dependent variables: Example: A persons heart rate was monitored while changing the amount of caffeine they ingested every 10 minutes.

5 Independent Variable: Located on X axis Dependent Variable: Located on Y axis

6 Models: Used to help describe laws and theories Laws: Explain what will happen not why. Theories: Explain why things happen. These can be proven wrong.

7 Using a Ruler Find these three values:

8 Find the length in meter and centimeters.

9 Pendulum and Length Relationship
Objective: Students will investigate the relationship between the length of a pendulum and period of oscillation (time to go back and forth once) Hypothesis: State what you believe will be the relationship to the length of the pendulum to the period of oscillation. Materials: Criteria: Must use units in meters and data must have at least 20 measurements.

10 Lab Set-up Title: Objective: Materials:
Procedure: Must use complete sentences and be clear in instructions. Data: Must use ruler and show units Analysis or Conclusion:

11 Data for Lab: Length (m) Time for 3 swings (s) Time for one swing (s)
Continue for a total of 20 data points

12 Analysis: Give all sources of error.
Graph your data and be sure to title the graph and label the axis with appropriate units. From you data, draw a best fit line through the points. Find an equation for you line. Find the period of oscillation for a pendulum that were 10 meters in length based on you data.

13 Lab Safety and Restrictions
Do not drop weights Do not go over 15 degrees in swing.

14 Alternative Lab

15 Start the Jump Lab or Ruler Lab

16 Jump Lab Data from Pd2 2011 Does the number of data points matter?
Are there some data points that we can take out? Refer to the graphs on the next slides.

20 Jump Lab Reflection: Did we notice a relationship during the jump lab?
Could we come up with a theory or law based on the results of the lab? What other independent variables could we have tested during the jump lab? Also, think of sub groups. What were the major sources of error?
