Tolerated other religions
Brought Roman culture and religion to many places, but allowed people to continue practicing their religions.
Very religious
Built temples and adopted other gods (Greeks, Egyptians, Persians, Gaul).
Didn’t know which god was real so they worshipped them all to play it safe.
Clash with Jews – because they didn’t want them to just worship just one god. It was dangerous to worship just one god. It would anger the other gods.
Strict Jewish religious laws.
Jews rebelled against the Romans, so Rome banishes them – Diaspora.
Rooted in Jewish ideas and traditions.
Based on laws of Moses.
The Messiah and a descendent of King David.
We get most information from the Bible.
Old Testament – Hebrew Bible, Jewish ideas and history.
New Testament – Life and teachings of Jesus. Letters by followers of Jesus.
His teachings challenged the authority of political and religious leaders crucifixion.
Jesus rose from the dead  Resurrection.
Love God
Love other people, all people.
Be generous to poor and sick
Treatment of others = love for God
Rescue from sin
Reject money or goods.
Paul of Tarsus helped spread Christianity. Helped it break from Judaism by saying that they don’t have to follow all the Jewish rules.
Within 100 years, thousands of Christians lived in the Roman empire.
Early Christians were persecuted and banned from Rome.
- Early 300 AD – Constantine removed the ban on Christianity and eventually Christianity became Rome’s official religion.
