1 Accuracy and Precision Lab/ Intro to Density

2 Common Core Connection
Objectives Today I will be able to: Differentiate between accuracy and precision Apply making accurate and precise measurements to a lab Informal assessment – monitoring student questions, group interactions during the lab and responses to the discussion after the lab Formal assessment – analyzing responses to the lab calculations and results section and the exit ticket Common Core Connection Build Strong Content Knowledge Attend to precision Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Reason abstractly and quantitatively

3 Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm-Up
Explain: Accuracy and Precision Notes Engage/Explore: Accuracy and Precision Lab Elaborate: Accuracy and Precision Lab Discussion Evaluate: Exit Ticket

4 Warm-Up What does it mean to be accurate? What about precise?
What are some techniques I can use to make precise measurements in lab? Why is it important to make accurate and precise measurements?

5 Accuracy Measurement is close to the accepted value

6 Precision Having more significant figures in a measurement

7 Objective Today I will be able to:
Differentiate between accuracy and precision Apply making accurate and precise measurements to a lab

8 Homework Write the conclusion for the Accuracy and Precision Lab
Signed syllabus due by Friday, August 29

9 Agenda Warm-Up Accuracy and Precision Notes Accuracy and Precision Lab

10 Accuracy and Precision Notes

11 Accuracy and Precision Lab
Take 2-3 minutes to read the lab procedure. Put a box around measurements you will record into the data table.

12 Lab Safety/ Clean Up No closed toe shoes or aprons are required

13 Accuracy and Precision Lab Trial 1
Collect data for trial 1 and complete the trial 1 calculations at your desk. Do not complete trial two calculations yet. Record your percent error on the board.

14 Trial 1 Discussion At your table discuss the following questions and be prepared to share out: What was your percent error? Were your measurements accurate? Were your measurements precise? How did the accuracy and precision of your measurement affect the volume you calculated? Percent error = [Exp-The] / The x 100 Goal: <5% Discussion: Measuring from the bottom, going to wide Next round: be more accurate!

15 Accuracy and Precision Lab Trial 2
Collect data for trial 2 and complete the trial 2 calculations at your desk. Record your percent error on the board.

16 Trial 2 Discussion At your table discuss the following questions and be prepared to share out: What was your percent error? Were your measurements accurate? Were your measurements precise? How did the accuracy and precision of your measurement affect the volume you calculated?

17 Conclusion Using the data and the information used in the discussion write your conclusion for the lab. If you do not finish writing the conclusion in class, it will become your homework.

18 Exit Ticket What are important components to include in a conclusion?
Icebreaker: If you could turn yourself into something different (car, animal, plant, etc) for one week, what would it be? Would you rather be 4 inches tall or 100 ft tall?
