 Objectives ◦ Today I will be able to: ◦ Apply knowledge of significant figures to a quiz  Differentiate between accuracy and precision  Apply making accurate and precise measurements to a lab  Informal assessment – monitoring student questions, group interactions during the lab and responses to the discussion after the lab  Formal assessment – analyzing responses to the lab calculations and results section and the exit ticket  Common Core Connection ◦ Build Strong Content Knowledge ◦ Attend to precision ◦ Model with mathematics ◦ Use appropriate tools strategically ◦ Reason abstractly and quantitatively

 Evaluate: Warm-Up  Evaluate: Significant Figures/ Safety Quiz  Explain: Accuracy and Precision Notes  Engage/Explore: Accuracy and Precision Lab  Elaborate: Accuracy and Precision Lab Discussion  Evaluate: Exit Ticket

 What are some techniques I can use to make precise measurements in lab?  Why is it important to make accurate and precise measurements?

 Today I will be able to: ◦ Apply knowledge of significant figures to a quiz ◦ Differentiate between accuracy and precision ◦ Apply making accurate and precise measurements to a lab

 Write the conclusion for the Accuracy and Precision Lab

 Warm-Up  Significant Figures Quiz  Accuracy and Precision Lab Trial 1  Accuracy and Precision Notes  Accuracy and Precision Lab Trial 2  Accuracy and Precision Lab Discussion  Exit Ticket

Take everything off of your desk except for a writing utensil and a calculator

Collect data for trial 1 and complete the trial 1 calculations at your desk. Do not complete trial two calculations yet. Record your percent error on the board.

 No closed toe shoes or aprons are required

 At your table discuss the following questions and be prepared to share out: ◦ What was your percent error? ◦ Were your measurements accurate? ◦ Were your measurements precise? ◦ How did the accuracy and precision of your measurement affect the volume you calculated?

 Measurement is close to the accepted value

 Having more significant figures in a measurement

Take 2-3 minutes to read the lab procedure. Put a box around measurements you will record into the data table.

Collect data for trial 2 and complete the trial 2 calculations at your desk. Record your percent error on the board.

 At your table discuss the following questions and be prepared to share out: ◦ What was your percent error? ◦ Were your measurements accurate? ◦ Were your measurements precise? ◦ How did the accuracy and precision of your measurement affect the volume you calculated?

Using the data and the information used in the discussion write your conclusion for the lab. If you do not finish writing the conclusion in class, it will become your homework.

What are important components to include in a conclusion? Icebreaker: ◦ Would you rather have legs as long as your fingers or fingers as long as your legs? ◦ Would you rather win the lottery or live twice as long?
