1 Quantum Numbers Practice

2 Common Core Connection
Objective Today I will be able to: Identify the properties of the 4 types of quantum numbers Determine the quantum numbers for various electrons in an atom Evaluation/ Assessment Informal assessment – student responses when reviewing quantum numbers problems Formal Assessment – collecting and analyzing students responses to quantum on the practice sheets Common Core Connection Build Strong Content Knowledge Reason abstractly and quantitatively Make sense and persevere in problem solving

3 Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm-Up Explain: Quantum Numbers
Elaborate: Quantum Numbers Practice Evaluate: Exit Ticket

4 Warm - Up Find your new seat 
What is the purpose of studying quantum numbers? What are the 4 quantum numbers? What is the definition of the principle quantum number? What is the symbol? Review your last quiz. Ms. Ose will recollect it

5 Objectives Today I will be able to:
Identify the properties of the 4 types of quantum numbers Determine the quantum numbers for various electrons in an atom

6 Homework Electrons Quiz 2 Friday, November 7
STEM Conclusion Due November 14

7 Agenda Warm-Up Quantum Numbers Problems Quantum Numbers Practice
Exit Ticket

8 Quantum Numbers Board Problems
Work with your table to solve the problems Ms.Ose puts on the PowerPoint.

9 Can an e- be described by the following set of quantum numbers?
n=7, l=3, ml= +3 All the quantum numbers are allowed values.

10 Can an e- be described by the following set of quantum numbers?
n=3, l=1, ml=-3 Not possible. The value of ml must be in the range -l to +l

11 Replace the ? Mark with an appropriate quantum number.
n=3, l=1, ml=? n=4, l=?, ml=-2 n=?, l=3, ml=?

12 Can an e- be described by the following set of quantum numbers?
n=2, l=1, ml=-2 n=3, l=2, ml=+2 n=4, l=3, ml=+3 n=5, l=2, ml=+3

13 Writing Quantum Numbers
You can identify the quantum numbers for any electron in an element Start by writing out the the electron configuration and orbital diagram for the element Locate the electron in the orbital diagram that you are solving the quantum number for Determine the 4 quantum numbers

14 Hydrogen’s electron Write electron configuration Draw orbital diagram
ml= 0 ms= +1/2

15 Helium’s second electron
Write electron configuration Draw orbital diagram n= 1 l= 0 ml= 0 ms= -1/2

16 Lithium’s third electron
Write electron configuration Draw orbital diagram n= 2 l= 0 ml= 0 ms= +1/2

17 Flourine’s 6th electron
Write electron configuration Draw orbital diagram n= 2 l= 1 ml= 0 ms= +1/2

18 Quantum Numbers Practice
Work through the problems with the students around you. Ask Ms. Ose for help if you have questions

19 Exit Ticket Write the quantum numbers for the 76th electron of Uranium
