Air Bag Crash Test Lab Final Testing

Objectives: – Today I will be able to: Design an airbag that is able to resist a crash test by using stoichiometry Informal assessment – monitoring group interactions as they design the air bag and complete the crash testing Formal assessment – analyzing student data from the lab and the data analysis Common Core Connection – Use appropriate tools strategically – Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them – Attend to precision

Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm Up Explain: Lab Safety Engage/Explore: Air bag Final testing Elaborate: Lab Calculations/ Conclusion Evaluate: Exit Ticket

Warm Up What modifications did I make to my prototype air bag to be more successful? What will I do in lab today to ensure that my final air bag crash test is successful.

Objectives Today I will be able to: – Design an airbag that is able to resist a crash test by using stoichiometry

Homework Finish calculations and conclusion

Agenda Warm Up Lab Safety Air bag final testing Lab Calculations/Conclusion Exit Ticket

Lab Safety Goggles, aprons and closed toe shoes must be worn to participate Make sure that the air bag is sealed before mixing the baking soda and vinegar All solutions can be disposed of down the sink

Air Bag Final testing (20 min) Fill in the mass of baking soda and vinegar from the warm up onto the lab paper Make an airbag Use a plastic cup and tape to attach your passenger (hard boiled egg) to the air bag Drop the air bag from different heights following Ms. Ose’s demo and record if the passenger survives Ms. Ose must sign off on each round of testing

Calculations/ Conclusion Complete the stoichiometry calculations for the lab at your desk. Work not finished in class will become your homework

Exit Ticket Was your airbag design successful? – Why or why not? What would you change in the future about this activity?
