1 Density Water Displacement/ Practice

2 Common Core Connection
Objective: Today I will be able to: Apply the water displacement method to calculating density Correctly solve density problems Informal Assessment – monitoring student questions and group interactions during the lab Formal assessment – analyzing responses to the exit ticket, lab and practice problems Common Core Connection Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Attend to precision Use appropriate tools strategically

3 Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm-Up
Explain: Methods for Calculating Density Notes Engage/ Explore: Water Displacement lab Elaborate: Density Practice Problems Evaluate: Exit Ticket

4 Warm - Up Take out your lab from yesterday
Check off the lab self-assessment sheet to see how you did on the lab

5 Objective Today I will be able to:
Apply the water displacement method to calculating density Correctly solve density problems

6 Homework Study for a Metric System/Dimensional Analysis/Accuracy and Precision Quiz Friday Finish Density Practice Problems

7 Agenda Warm-Up Methods for Calculating Density Notes
Water Displacement lab Density Practice Problems Exit Ticket

8 Methods for Calculating Density

9 Calculating Density Remember, Density = mass/volume Mass is determined using a scale Volume is calculated several different ways

10 Finding Volume To find the volume of a liquid, use a graduated cylinder Make sure to read the bottom of the meniscus

11 Finding Volume Length x Width x Height
Volume of a regular object, such as a wooden block

12 Finding Volume Water Displacement Method - Read the initial volume of water in a graduated cylinder - Place object into cylinder - Read the final volume of water - Final – Initial = Volume of the object

13 Density Water Displacement Lab
Ms. Ose will assign lab groups

14 Lab Safety/ Clean Up No closed toe shoes or aprons are required
If you spill, clean the water with a paper towel When you finish collecting data, return the lab area as you found it

15 Density Practice When you finish the lab activity begin working on the Density practice problems. Whatever problems you do not finish will become your homework.

16 Exit Ticket Which density problem was the most difficult?
