4 C OURSE L OAD : STRIKING THE B ALANCE How many courses do I have to take? All LW students must take 6 classes each semester (1 free) Maximum of 7 classes each semester

6 R ESOURCES O NLINE AND A T S CHOOL Talk to your teachers, advisors, administrators, and parents (* Dont just talk to friends!) Use online tools : Course catalog, academic advising guidebook, resource handouts Extra sign-up forms available online

7 E QUITY, A CCESS, AND I NCLUSION Two Things to Remember: One students exception can be another students exclusion. There is no game to course sign-ups. Your preferences (ranks) are what will be used to make your schedule.

9 S IGN UP FOR C OURSES FOR THE E NTIRE Y EAR ! Advantages: 1. Students get their schedules for the entire year. 2. 4 day add/drop period both semesters 3. Fewer changes to yearlong courses 4. Increased opportunities for 1 st choice electives.

10 G OALS O F S CHEDULING FOR 10 TH G RADE Goal is to get students as many first choices as possible within 6 classes Soph. Tech Arts priority to fulfill requirement Ranking required number of choices is important for scheduling flexibility If you dont rank total number of choices this does NOT help you to get your first choice (* remember : there are no games! )

12 T HINGS TO K NOW …MATH 1. Select your NEXT APPROPRIATE course, not your aspirational course. Check in with your current math teacher about your placement for next year. 2. If you plan to do summer work, you MUST check the box on the form and check in with Ms. Boitano or there may not be a spot for you in your intended course for next year.

14 T HINGS TO K NOW …. WORLD LANGUAGES 1. Select your next level language 2. If you plan to sign up for an honors/accelerated course, read the WL Honors criteria online and see your CURRENT teacher on March 28 th for a signature

15 T HINGS TO K NOW … TECHNICAL ARTS 1. 10 th graders have priority for Tech Arts classes..Why? 2. New offerings in the Tech Arts for 2012-2013 Electronics: Analog and Digital Electronics: Device Invention Wood and Metal: Private Skills For A Public Purpose

16 W HAT IS NEW AND DIFFERENT ? VISUAL ARTS Architectural Design (used to be Arch 1 and Arch 2 now is one year long course) Animation Drawing and Painting: The Mural Mixed Media

PERFORMING ARTS Introduction to Instrumental Music Winds Brass Strings Some Percussion (Ms. Stoddard and Ms. Finn will follow up once you have signed up for the class) Advanced Jazz Ensemble Dance Ensemble (now yearlong) **Note where signatures are needed! Dont wait until the last day to get signatures…

18 W HAT S NEW AND DIFFERENT ? E NGLISH Journalism is now yearlong. The class is (as usual) open to 10 th graders. (All 10 th graders are signed up for English 2)

19 S CIENCE : T HINKING A HEAD TO 11 TH GRADE Honors Biology: Anatomy and Physiology Honors Biology: Genetics and Evolution Marine Ecology Brain and Behavior Honors Chemistry Physics Honors Physics All 10 th graders will be signed up for Chemistry.

20 H ISTORY : T HINKING A HEAD TO 11 TH GRADE All 10 th graders are signed up for World History 11 th grade- US History 12 th grade: Senior Seminars

21 T HE C ENTER … The Philanthropy Initiative Read course description in catalog. Open to all 10 th graders in spring semester

22 P EER C OUNSELING … Sign up by checking box on your form. You can do peer counseling even if you have 7 classes. Peer counseling is not a class for a grade or credit but is an excellent opportunity!

25 A CADEMIC S CHEDULING T IMELINE : W HAT S N EXT ? Course sign up forms due on Thursday April 5 th. Course sign up forms will not be processed without medical form due on April 5 th. Schedules available online, 6/30 Add/drop period, first rotation of classes in the fall and spring for 4 days. Same priorities apply from scheduling process.

26 P OLICY R EMINDERS Minimum of 6 classes required 7 class maximum Teacher/block selection= not possible All changes wait until add/drop to be fair to everyone Review priority by grade-level in the guidebook THERE ARE NO GAMES… preferences should be authentic because there is no way to game the system
