2 French Revolution occurred after the American Revolution
French society divided into 3 estates (govt) First estate – clergy (religious) Second estate - Nobility Third estate- Commoners (98% of population) had to pay the taille ( tax) other estates were exempt Causes of the French Revolution -Famine Overspending on wars, luxury Commoners (third estate angry over tax)

3 Third estate decides to call itself the National Assembly and construct a New Constitution
Commoners protect National Assembly from King’s forces, a mob storms and takes the Bastille (Armory and prison) King no longer has authority, rebels in control National Assembly votes to end the privileges of the nobles and clergy

5 Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen (1789) - equal rights for all men, but no political rights for women Thousands of starving French women (armed with pitchforks, broomsticks, and muskets) march on King Louis XVI Palace and make him accept the decisions of the National Assembly, escort him and his family back to Paris (prisoners) France enters war with Austria, A French radical group (Paris Commune ) takes power becoming the National Convention, pursuing a policy of dechristianization and adopting a new calender Also abolish monarchy, have King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette beheaded by guillotine

7 Neighboring countries alarmed by execution of a King, decide to declare war on France
National convention forms Committee of Public Safety lead by Maximilien Robespierre, Reign of Terror begins as 40,000 people are killed/executed for not supporting the new government In 1799, a coup d’ tat (overthrow of government) and Napoleon Bonaparte takes power forming France’s fourth government (consulate) in 10 years. Napoleon crowned Emperor. Napoleonic code (early 1800’s) – gives France a more cohesive legal system and preserved equality and other rights gained in Revolution, however newspapers censored

9 Robespierre, Reign of Terror

10 Napoleon victorious in war- controlled Europe from with the Grand Empire, which included the French Empire, the dependent states and allied states. Napoleon’s Grand Empire collapses due to Great Britain (unconquered by France) and nationalism Napoleon loses many soldiers while at war with Russia, other European states rise up to fight. Defeated Napoleon exiled, returns and loses a battle at Waterloo…exiled to St. Helena and the former King’s brother becomes King.
