A. 1940s: Yugoslavia was led by communist Josip Brož Tito, who names himself President for life and doesn’t align with the Soviet Union
1. Tito’s dictatorship keeps all of the different ethnic groups in check – forcing them to work together as Yugoslavians
B. 1980s: After Tito’s death ethnic & cultural tensions grow
C 1991: As communism falls in E. Europe, parts of Yugoslavia begin to declare independence based on ethnicity, language and religion

3. II. Ethnic Cleansing in Yugoslavia
