How does the end of communism cause genocide in Yugoslavia?

2 I. Tito’s Rule A. 1940s: Yugoslavia was led by communist Josip Brož Tito, who names himself President for life and doesn’t align with the Soviet Union 1. Tito’s dictatorship keeps all of the different ethnic groups in check – forcing them to work together as Yugoslavians B. 1980s: After Tito’s death ethnic & cultural tensions grow C 1991: As communism falls in E. Europe, parts of Yugoslavia begin to declare independence based on ethnicity, language and religion

3 II. Ethnic Cleansing in Yugoslavia
A. 1991: War breaks in Slovenia & Croatia, Serb-led Yugoslav army tries to stop their independence, Serbs defeated in both wars B. 1991: Macedonia declares independence, but Serbs don’t fight it C. 1995: Bosnia wants independence, Radovan Karadžić leads Bosnian Serbs against Bosnian Muslims, starts ethnic cleansing, UN steps in D. 1998: Muslims in Yugoslav province Kosovo want independence 1. Serbian Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosević begins ethnic cleansing against Muslims in Kosovo a. UN intervenes again to stop the genocide : Kosovo comes under control of the UN E. 2006: Serbia & Montenegro split, ending “Yugoslavia” F. 2008: Kos. declares independ., Serbia threatens force, U.S. recognizes Kos.
