Protestant Reformation Puritans wanted to ‘purify’ the Anglican Church by removing all remaining aspects of Catholicism Left England when King James refused (1603) Economic Changes Tenant farmers in England were evicted in favor of raising sheep Wool farmers formed joint-stock companies which had the ability to venture out into the world

1663 Charles II takes land and names it Carolina Two distinct regions, scattered population to the North, harbors and good farming land to the south The Georgia Experiment 1720s refuge for ‘worthy poor’ 1732 James Oglethorpe founded the colony Strict rules until the 1740s
