2 After WWI Japan- seek to expand, new markets, need resources (Emperor Hirohito) Germany (Hitler)- Nazi Dictator Italy (Mussolini) – Fascism both seek to restore pride, economy These 3 countries are the Axis powers Russia (Stalin)- Communism, rules by fear (executions, labor camps)

4 Definitions Totalitarianism- a form of government that controls all aspects of its citizens lives (no opposing political parties) Fascism- political belief that places the importance of the nation over that of the individual (no opposition parties) Blitzkrieg- lightning war (speed, efficiency) Gestapo- German secret police loyal to Hitler

Nuremberg Laws- Jewish people (blame WWI loss) have no citizenship (voting rights), must wear yellow star of David Kristallnacht- vandalizing of Jewish businesses and places of worship Holocaust- genocide (systematic mass execution) Jews placed in Ghettos and concentration camps
