- Scottish “clearances” forced out thousands of people
Introduced to Britain in the 18th century, advantages over the staple crop of grain, took only 3-4 months to grow, could be cultivated by hand, did not need rich soil and had high nutritional value = HIGH POPULATION, not enough room

11. A Poor Man's Country... - Land for agriculture was plentiful & cheap
- Many immigrants still had to find seasonal work until they could purchase land
- Families relied on handouts from the army

- In the 1840’s, famine hit Ireland, affecting the potato crop
- 90,000 Irish left for British North America in 1847
- Many suffered from sickness like cholera & typhus
- 1/5 of all Irish that left died before their 1st winter
