1. Social Story: How to get from the McCormick House to the First Division Museum during field trips
The McCormick House is often called “the Mansion.”
The First Division Museum

2. You will leave from the front of the museum (the Mansion)
There are a few loose stones on the porch and they are blocked by posts for safety.
Please don’t walk too close to the edge!
You want to go down the ramp and turn right, around the corner.

3. Keep turning right to go around the museum.

4. You will not be going back into the Gold Theater.
The First Division Museum has more restrooms than the McCormick Museum!
If you need a restroom break, we recommend stopping at the First Division Museum.

5. Walk around the back of museum.
You are heading back to the path that goes right past the reflecting pool.
If you would like, you can cut across the grass to make your walk a little shorter.

6. Once you are at four corners, follow the arrow on the green sign pointing to the First Division Museum.
This is “four corners” where four paths meet!
You will see straight rows of trees.

7. Keep an eye out for the small green signs!
Just beyond this sign you will start to see a number of tanks.
People are allowed to climb on the tanks, but if you are on a field trip we ask you to wait until after you have visited both museums, otherwise you might be late!

8. You will pass several tanks on the way to the First Division Museum.
The path will turn from asphalt into red brick, so you know you are on the right track!
Remember, you can come back to the tanks after you visit the museum!
The tanks were repainted in 2017 and some of the grass nearby was replanted. The green posts keep people from walking on the newly replanted grass.

9. Keep following the path until you see the bridge.

10. The bridge crosses a small stream.
It is not a good idea to play in the stream.
If you get wet or muddy, you might not be allowed to enter the museum.

11. Do you see the “Big Red One?”
This set of flowers shows the nickname for the First Infantry Division. They are called the Big Red One because soldiers wear a patch with a large red 1 on it!
Please don’t pick the flowers.

12. You made it! These are the front doors to the First Division Museum.
Inside the front doors is the lobby.
There is often a volunteer at a desk who greets people and who can give directions.
