Mongols link east and west. Japan and Korea Japan- Shotoku Taishi unifies Japan with central government and one ruler, over when he dies. Wealthy landowners and the Samurai, mostly agrarian, some trade but mostly isolationist Korea- Separated into three kingdoms, not unified. Took on Confucianism and copied Chinese government

Buddhism split- Theravada and Mahayana. Theravada: Way of life, strict personal behavior and meditation lead to nirvana Mahayana: Devotion and a good life leads to nirvana and salvation Islam moves into Northern India 3 competing religions in one territory Ends when Tamerlane comes to town

End of Rome, loss of stability in Europe, Christian Church reaches height of power and controls every aspect of daily life, feudalism, formation of modern European countries Byzantine Empire and Crusades Eastern Rome- Greek orthodox, located on border between Christian Europe and Islamic M/E Crusades: holy wars attempting to claim Jerusalem for Christianity 1st crusade: Christians win despite heavy losses 2nd Crusade: Failure and Muslims recapture Jerusalem 3rd Crusade: Fight to a draw, Muslims allow Christian pilgrimage 4th Crusade: Western Europeans fight with Byzantines and never make it to holy lands Western European powers build kingdoms, Byzantine Empire and Church start losing power, Ottomans and Black Death coming soon
