3 What is HIV and AIDS. https://www. bing. com/videos/search
What do you know? HIV = Human Immuno-deficiency Virus AIDS = Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome It is a virus that attacked the bodies immune system It is spread through bodily fluids – semen, vaginal fluids, blood and breast milk This means it is spread by having unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing needles with an infected drug user, from mother to baby during birth or breastfeeding. You cant get it from kissing or toilet seats!

4 Global Rates of HIV Infection
Describe the pattern shown in the map about the global distribution of HIV. Developing countries Southern Africa Developed countries Russia Anomalies General pattern

5 – Can you sort the cards into the correct columns
– Can you sort the cards into the correct columns? Cause, Effects, Solutions Causes of HIV / AIDS (How is it spread?) Effects of HIV / AIDS (how does it affect people?) Solutions (How can we prevent the spread of HIV?)

6 HIV is spread through unprotected sex with an infected person
HIV is spread through unprotected sex with an infected person AIDS projects have been set up to help women find a new business instead of prostitution Women have little status and are forced to have sex with infected men HIV has spread quickly because of improvements in transport so people move around more 2.4 million Africans have died from AIDS Education programmes to teach people about sexual health and using condoms Reduce the debt of African countries so they can spend money on HIV and AIDS prevention Poor hygiene in hospitals means that infected blood is given to patients during blood transfusions An increase in drug use has meant that HIV is spread through contaminated needles Babies are born HIV positive as it is passed on during child birth People can’t work on the farms if they are ill with AIDS so can’t get food Drug companies can provide cheaper drugs to treat HIV 13 million children are orphaned because of AIDS People with AIDS can’t work so they have even less money Condoms should be issued for free to people Keep children in education for longer so they know more about the disease and how to keep protected Card sort. Put into a table or colour code.

11 Linking Concepts: Based on what you have learned from the card sort, how do these concepts link together? Link ideas… Poor people cant afford to buy condoms to prevent HIV spreading HIV develops into full blown AIDS without medical drugs AIDS causes the death rate to increase as 2.4 million people have dies in Africa Education can teach people the importance of using condoms Condoms are used to prevent the spread of HIV during sexual intercourse Women can pass on HIV to their babies during childbirth and breastfeeding People are unable to work when they are ill with AIDS Medicine needed to prevent HIV becoming AIDS (anti-retrovirals) are too expensive Can you think of any more? Ideas of links for differentiation

12 Health and Development
GCSE style question: Explain the link between health and development. Use the example of HIV in your answer. Alternative question: Give reasons why poor health prevents countries from becoming more developed.

13 Writing to Persuade In Malawi the government have made some progress to reduce the number of new infections from HIV Write a letter to the Malawian government explaining to them the importance of continuing to reduce HIV and the need to spend money on solutions. Give them your ideas as to the best way to reduce the spread of HIV in Malawi.
