2 Chapter 1 Main Points: Essential Questions
Jonas is feeling apprehensive about the December Ceremony Family Units must share feelings every evening When Jonas said he was feeling apprehensive, his parents want to speak with him privately Essential Questions What is the December Ceremony? Why do they not know what animals are? Is the feeling sharing ritual used to resolve conflict?

4 Chapter 2 Main Points Assignments are chosen by the Committee of Elders (the leaders of the community) After Twelve, you are considered an adult, and age is no longer important To obtain children in a family unit, they must apply and be approved. December Ceremonies last 2 days- each group has 50 people unless someone has been released Essential Questions How are their imaginary animals what we know as real animals? (Lily’s comfort object is an elephant, and Jonas’s was a bear) What will Jonas’s assignment be? What do the people in the community eat?

Jonas tells his dream about Fiona, and finds out he had his first Stirrings Everyone has Stirrings and must take a daily pill for treatment until they enter the House of the Old EQ Why do they have to be treated for Stirrings? Does Jonas want to take the pills that get rid of the Stirrings?

18 Chapter 6 The community is at the first day of the December Ceremony (Groups One through Eight), then the second day begins (Groups Nine through Eleven) before the Ceremony of Twelve (Cliffhanger) When someone dies in the community, they perform a Ceremony of Loss. When that person’s name is used again, they perform Murmur-of- Replacement Ceremony Babies that aren’t developed to expectations enough can be labeled “Inadequate” and released OR labeled “Uncertain” and given another year to mature EQ What is “Elsewhere”? Do they “recycle” names?

BICYCLE- moving gradually out into the community, away from the protective unit JACKETS: buttons down back- interdependence, buttons down front- independence, smaller buttons and pockets- maturity Vocabulary Interdependence pg. 40 “Fours, Fives, and Sixes all wore jackets that fastened down the back so that they would have to help each other dress and would learn interdependence.” def: the dependence of 2 or more people or things on each other Independence pg. 40 “The front-buttoned jacket was the first sign of independence, the first very visable symbol of growing up.” def: the fact or state of being independent (not depending on another)

21 Chapter 7 MP The Ceremony of Twelve begins- Asher is assigned Assistant Director of Recreation, Fiona is assigned Caretaker of the Old, and JONAS IS SKIPPED! The Chief Elder recalls the time Asher mixed up the words “snack” and “smack.” The author reveals the discipline methods EQ Why was Jonas skipped? Did the Chief Elder make a mistake? Will Jonas receive an Assignment? Did Jonas not complete his volunteer hours? Could the committee not decide on an Assignment for Jonas either?

22 Chapter 7 LT Foreshadowing: The author was dropping hints that something would happen at the Ceremony of Twelve by repeating that Jonas felt apprehensive Vocabulary Prestige pg.53 “Birthmother was an important job, if lacking in prestige.” Def: widespread respect and admiration Acquisition pg. 54 “The Instructor of Threes were in charge of the acquisition of correct language.” Def: learning or developing of a skill, habit, or quality

24 Chapter 8 MP Jonas isn’t assigned, he is “selected” as Receiver of Memory, the most honored in the community Five characteristics of Receiver of Memory: intelligence, integrity, courage, wisdom, Capacity to See Beyond The faces in the crowd changed like the apple changed EQ What happened to the Receiver-In-Training 10 years ago? What does The Receiver do? What physical pain will Jonas have to endure?

26 Ch. 9 MP Jonas is already being treated somewhat different since he has been selected as Receiver of Memory. There is only one Receiver, and that position is the most important in the community Jonas receives his list of rules for his Selection EQ Can all adults tell lies? Why does the Receiver have to be “apart and alone”? What happened to the previous Receiver in Training 10 years ago, and why doesn’t anyone speak of it?

29 Ch. 10 MP Jonas has his first day of training, and the door at the Annex is the only door that is locked. The Receiver can turn the speaker off! The current Receiver’s “job” transmit all of the world’s memories to Jonas EQ Can the Receiver have a family unit since he/she must be apart and alone? Why doesn’t Jonas know snow and downhill? Why was snow his first memory? How did the past Receiver-In-Training fail?

30 Ch. 10- continued LT Simile pg. 78: The current Receiver compares being weighted with the world’s memories to riding downhill on a sled in deep snow. He comments that you have to push hard and keep going.
