1 Freshmen English Coming of age

2 Do now: video clips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTyyKRO kC3E
(1:00) IPHs (2:06)

3 On a separate sheet of paper:
How does Katniss “come of age” in these clips (and the first Hunger Games). Think about what coming of age means, the posters you made, and how Katniss transforms in the book/movie.

4 Coming of age! Brainstorm a list of books, movies, tv shows and characters who “come of age.” You have 2 minutes to do this in groups before we share out with the class!

5 Main elements of a coming of age story
On your own, complete the main elements handout on a character/story of your choosing (not katniss).

6 Pair! With a partner who has a different character/story, share your answers with each other. How did your definition of coming of age differ from your partners?

7 Jigsaw! On the other side of your paper, you have a 1, 2, 3, or 4. Form into groups with your other like numbers, and work together on the section you have been assigned

8 Teach each other Now form groups that have a 1, 2, 3, and 4 in them. Teach each other what you discussed in your prior group and finish filling out your handouts as a group. While you work, discuss other ideas that may not get brought up and add them into the appropriate categories!

9 Exit slip Have you had any “coming of age” moments? Using the categories that you just filled out, tell me a story about how you came of age. Try to hit as many of the categories as you can, even if that means a few different stories!
