1 How to Read Literature Like a Professor Chapters 22-24

2 Warm Up: In your groups, do the following:  List every movie, TV show, book, comic book (anything that you can think of) that has a blind character in it.  Choose one and explain the point behind the character’s blindness.  List every movie, TV show, book, comic book (anything that you can think of) that has a sick character in it.  Choose one and explain the point behind the character’s illness.  Why make a character blind? Besides literal blindness, what else can indicate a lack of sight?  Why make a character ill? What are qualities of a significant literary illness?  List as many illnesses as you can and explain what significance they would have in a novel (what moral do they teach)?  Why make a character have heart failure? What is significant about the heart in literature?

3 “Where are you going, where have you been”  How are characters “blind” in the short story?  What causes characters to see in the short story?  What message is the author is trying to convey about blindness and sight?

4 Poetry Analysis using How to Read Lit:  Read the poem given to your group.  Divide your paper into 4 sections and title each section as follows:  Section 1: Breakdown of poem: Title, author, Speaker (which is different from author), purpose, tone, figurative language  Section 2: Elements related to How to Read Literature Like a Professor  Section 3: Literal and/or Figurative interpretation(s) of the poem  Section 4: Intertexual Connection (HRL, pg. 34)  Before filling out your sheet, choose a color (or colors) that represents the tone of your poem and complete your assignment in that (or those) colors. ***One word answers are insufficient. Please be thorough and include multiple interpretations if there is more than one. Also, include line numbers as examples to back up your answers in each box.
