1 Theoretical Perspectives:
Feminism

2 Feminism . Feminists believe that society is patriarchical (men dominate) Feminism – liberal, radical, social - aim to challenge patriarchy in different ways

3 Developed in the second half of the century
Explained the impact of sex & gender on behaviour Also, consider human behaviour from the specific view of women •Root in conflict theory, but separate gender from class Androcentricity a bias that assumes male experience is human experience & therefore applies to women. Often doesn’t include gender in research Double Standard – are biases that apply a different standard for evaluating the behaviour of women Change is required so that the needs of all people are met

4 . Liberal feminism Socialist feminism – challenges capitalism & the patriarchal model of the family. Inequality is rooted in the sexual division of paid & unpaid labour Radical feminism

5 Liberal Feminists Argue that discriminatory policies force women into the inferior social class that restricts their rights to participate fully in society according to their individual abilities. Example:

6 Liberal feminists Liberal feminists believe that the family is sexist because it supports mainstream culture which is also sexist. They advocate change through legislation and education

7 Liberal feminists . For example; Equal Pay Act, Sex Discrimination Act
Laws against domestic violence, marital rape Better education – equal opportunity at work and education

8 Radical feminists Radical feminists believe that Patriarchy is central source of division in society. Essentially, men exploit women as husbands, partners, sons, brothers. This exploitative relationship is reflected in the family in which women do all the work for the benefit of men

9 Radical feminists believe -
The family is an exploitive institution The notion of ‘family’ excludes those who pursue different lifestyles . Some advocate separation of men and women
