2 I Notice, I Wonder… What are some things that you notice about this image? Or, what are some things that you wonder about this image?

3 Opening Problem On your half sheet, please complete.
Place both of these numbers and their opposites on both number lines: -4 and 8

4 Positive and Negative Numbers in Real Life Situations
Outcome: Students will be able to place positive and negative numbers on a horizontal and vertical number line, and identify the integer represented in a situation to complete their gallery walk. 6.NS.C.5, 6.NS.C.6a, 6.NS.C.6c Outcome: In groups students will create a poster that models a real life scenario involving positive and negative numbers.

5 Language Objective By the end of the lesson, I will be able to use the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing to communicate the academic math language of positive and negative numbers in real life situations. I will be able to place positive and negative numbers on a horizontal and vertical number line, and identify the integer represented in a situation to complete their gallery walk. Academic math language vocabulary: positive, negative, vertical, horizontal, number line.

6 Turn and Talk to you partners
Looking at page 9, discuss what you see. What do you think the word elevation means in this situation?

7 Let’s think about this…

8 Pg. 10 Circle the correct statement, and fix the other statement so it is correct.
A submarine is submerged 800 feet below sea level. The depth of the submarine is -800 feet below sea level. 800 feet below sea level can be represented by the integer -800. The elevation of a coral reef with respect to sea level is given as -150 feet. The coral reef is 150 feet below sea level. The depth of the coral reef is -150 feet below sea level.

9 How do you feel? topic.

10 Group Poster: 20 minutes Create your own real-world situation involving: Money Temperature Elevation Other real world scenarios Include: Title (ex. Sea level, Temperature, Money) Written situation based on title (use at least 2 points) A BLANK vertical number line Answer key (separate piece of paper stapled to back) Picture (IF TIME)

11 Fill in exploratory challenge poster sheet
Gallery Walk (pg. 12) Write the integers for each situation. Determine the appropriate scale to graph the points. Graph the points on the number line

12 How do you feel? topic.

13 Homework Page 11 # 1-4

14 Accommodations Read or reread presentation or activity directions, as needed or after prompting Use examples to model and act as a guide for emerging learners
